1997: the year in review for Waverly

HLWW's Rob Bakeberg and Heat

her Westling were nominated for the Academics, Arts and Athletics Award . . . Wright County 4-H members make up a Dairy Bowl team that placed eighth in the nation at the North American Invitational 4-H Dairy Bowl quiz in Louisville, Kentucky. Team members from Waverly were Angie Bakeberg, Rachel Bakeberg, Ryan Bakeberg and Dan Glessing. The team was coached by George Bakeberg . . .

Pete's Grocery was burglarized . . . Miss Waverly Angela Ordorff attended the St. Paul Winter Carnival . . . Jason Davis of KSTP's "On the Road Again" visited the Hubert Humphrey Museum New Year's Day . . . Newly elected Waverly Mayor Charlie Bush and City Councilman Dave Fournier were sworn in . . .

Bob and Bill Hunter started a modular home business . . . Waverly Lions make a $5,000 pledge to the Humphrey Museum . . . The Citizens State Bank also donated a $5,000 matching funds check to the Humphrey Museum . . .

February

HLWW seventh grade math team participated at the state level with Andrea Niesen, Cassie Ogle, Monzie Smith, Jeremy Swanson, Rob Oliva, Megan Mills, Mike Broll and Wayne Carlson . . . The Waverly Area Visionary Enrichment welcome committee worked on the welcome packet for new residents . . .

The home of Bradley Kahlstorf and June Simmons south of Waverly was destroyed by a fire . . . Fifth grader Ben Doroff won the HLWW geography bee and sixth grader Pat Salonek was the runner-up . . . Curt Eastlund, Minnesota Department of Transportation representative, answered questions from the Waverly City Council and residents about the Hwy. 12 project . . . The HLWW sixth grade traveling basketball team finished its league schedule with a 10-2 record.

March

Pat Hanson's sixth grade students at Humphrey Elementary built bird houses for area senior citizen groups . . . Catherine Jackson, president of Citizens State Bank of Waverly, was appointed to the Central Minnesota Initiative Fund Board of Directors . . .

Marysville Merrymakers got second place in a 4-H share-the-fun competition at Buffalo . . . Rick and Maureen Luedke were the first residents in the Summerfields' development . . . The Waverly Lions donated $250 to the HLWW drama department towards the purchase of a new spotlight . . .

Patty and Jessica Rud cheered for the Golden Gophers basketball team in San Antonio, Texas. The trip and tickets were won from radio station KDWB . . .Walter Mondale joined the board of the Hubert H. Humphrey Museum.

April

The depot at Waterfront Park was demolished to make way for a new pavilion . . .The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency recognized Mike Lahlum for excellence in wastewater treatment . . . Dwayne and Rande Diers of the Waverly area were honored as the Wright County Farm Family of the Year . . .

The Wright County American Dairy Association crowned Angie Bakeberg as one of its three princesses . . . Tina Horstmann, fifth grader, won the spelling bee held at the Humphrey Elementary School . . . Doris Schendel of Waverly was honored as the outstanding Wright County Extension volunteer . . . Mayor Charlie Bush reminded residents of the city ordinances pertaining to unsightly property.

May

Exchange student Paulo Provoa lived with host family Jeff and Debbie Gritz of Waverly . . . Bob Bergland, former representative from Minnesota and U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under former President Jimmy Carter, accepted an honorary advisory position on the board of directors for the Hubert Humphrey Museum . . .

The Waverly Area Visionary Enrichment Committee donated $750 to the Humphrey Museum . . . Sean Campbell of Waverly attended Boys State . . . Alice Diers showed slides from her Australian trip to the Waverly Lions. The Lions donated funds to help Diers with the costs of her trip . . .

Don Graham continued a 50-year tradition as he read the names of the dead at the Waverly Memorial Day service.

June

The Marysville Lutheran Church got a new cross to replace one damaged in a storm. Harvey Young and Jim Gallagher set the cross in place . . . Waverly royalty and candidates cleaned ditches and roadsides around Lake Waverly . . .

Deb Ryks was hired as Waverly's new city clerk . . . Fifty-seven students attended the Joe Woitalla Memorial Fishing Expo . . . Tiffany Ogle represented Waverly at Girls State . . . Angie Bakeberg was runner-up for Region 7 Dairy Princess.
