Trevor Berg wins 100th wrestling match
In the semi-final round of wrestling at the the Big Lake Invitational Dec. 11, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (HLWW) wrestler Trevor Berg pinned Jake Zocoli of Big Lake to capture his 100th career victory.
Later in the evening, Berg pinned Mike Fox of Rush City to win the 130-pound championship.
As a team, the HLWW Lakers took fifth place scoring 112 points. Big Lake dominated the tournamet scoring 262 points.
Third place finishers for the Lakers were Joey Gracyzk at 152 and Luke Long at 171. Fourth place finishers included Pat Salonek at 103, Jordan Hirsch at 119 and Tim Berg at 145.
The Lakers dualed the Big Lake Hornets in Humphrey Hall Dec. 14. The strong Hornets won the dual 50-12.
Trevor Berg scored a big victory with a 8-5 decision over Kelly Flaherty. Flaherty is ranked fifth at 135 pounds in Class AA.
Other winners for the Lakers were Long and Tim Fournier. Fournier captured his first varsity victory with a pin over Chris Macheel in 2:59.
The Lakers finished a busy week on Dec. 15 with a triangular at home against Concordia Academy and Glencoe-Silver Lake (GSL). The Lakers fell to Concordia Academy 43-28 and to GSL 34-31.
Both matches were very competitive and hinged on the outcomes of just a few matches. Unfortunately, the Lakers' inexperience in tight dual meets led to mistakes which hurt their chances to pick up a team win.
Individuals who gained wins for the Lakers were Salonek at 103, who improved to 7-4 on the season with wins over Jason Esala of Concordia Academy and Nate Branch of GSL. Jordan Hirsch improved to 6-5 with wins over Eric Vasko of GSL and a pin of Matt Koppe of Concordia Academy. Trevor Berg improved to 9-0, with pins over each of his opponents.
Salonek has been the most positive performer thus far this season. Despite giving up 6-8 pounds in each match, he has not let it deter him. Salonek has some great techniques and looks to be a special wrestler in the future.
