Waverly mayor's car stolen
By Charles Bush
From the voice of experience: do not leave your keys in your car even if it is in your own driveway.
Two weeks ago my car was stolen from my driveway, taken for a joy ride and eventually dumped in the lake by the landing.
Apparently, my car was the third such theft in the past couple of weeks. I hope that the individuals are caught, and I'm sure they will be.
In thinking about the senselessness of this past week, I believe that something has to be done to curb this type of vandalism and crime.
This past summer the city experienced a great deal of vandalism at its park by juveniles, and I believe that my theft was a crime of juveniles.
It is high time that these individuals pay for the damage they cause and not by doing community service, which is too often what the courts assess the individual. I would like to see communities, like Waverly, sue the parents or guardians of the juveniles involved in these crimes for the monetary losses incurred.
I personally don't want individuals who have committed a crime against the city now doing community service for that community. I would sooner have the loss in property paid for by the individual or the guardians of the individual.
This would help deter these wanton acts of vandalism. If the kids can't be responsible, let's make mom and dad responsible for the kids. If they have to start paying for their kid's crime, maybe they will become a little more concerned about where their kids are at night and what they are doing.
They created them, not the schools or communities. Something has to happen.
