HLWW FFA members say 'So long,' to Kansas City for the last time
By Tony Lorentz
The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted FFA Chapter attended the 71st National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Mo. Nov. 11 through the 14.
This was the last National FFA Convention to be held in Kansas City. Next year the national convention will be moved to Louisville, Ky., because Kansas City is too small to hold the convention.
After a long bus ride through ice and snow, we arrived in Kansas City. The first stop was the American Royal to watch a rodeo. Following the rodeo, you could either go to the American Royal Museum or stay and watch a concert by Ricochet.
After the rodeo and concert at the American Royal, the FFA members left for the convention center for the opening session. The theme at this year's convention was "Making the Connection." During the opening session, the national FFA officers put on a skit to get across this point.
The session concluded with a laser light show. With sleep in mind, we boarded the bus for the hotel. The next day we attended the career show, where many businesses had booths available to FFA members to ask questions and get information on the businesses.
Lunch and dinner were on your own during the convention. There were many sessions during the convention that the FFA members could attend. During these sessions speeches were given by many people across the United States. During the sessions, the 1997-98 National FFA officer team gave their retiring addresses and the 1998-99 officer team was chosen.
During the convention, members also had the opportunity to attend workshops held by past national FFA officers and other motivational speakers.
The convention offered tours of local businesses and we went on the Guy's food tour. Guy's is a producer of snack food products.
On the last day, we took a tour of the Truman Library after which we went to a downtown mall for a couple of hours to look around, and buy souvenirs and then returned to the convention center.
Back at the convention center there was a group picture with every chapter from Minnesota. Mary and Rachel Bakeberg went to a leadership dinner that night, which was a reunion for the FFA members who attended the Washington Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. during the summer.
Before loading the bus for home Friday night, we took one last look around. This year's convention had over 45,000 FFA members from across the country.
The FFA members from Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted attending the last national FFA convention were Mary Bakeberg, Tony Bakeberg, Rachel Bakeberg, Tiffany Olson, Tony Lorentz and Tim Berg.
The members greatly appreciate George and Kay Bakeberg's efforts for driving the group to Big Lake to load the bus and picking us up.
