HL history: A lot of help goes a long way

By Michael Mitchell

Looking back at the summer of 1998 finds many improvements made at the Howard Lake public parks.

A new flag pole was installed at Memorial Park, donated by the wives of Chuck, Timber and Jim Dahlberg. The Howard Lake Legion Post installed the pole and will install a permanent memorial plaque. The cost of this project was $3,000.

A new sprinkler system was also installed at Memorial Park to water both the baseball and football fields. This automatic system was donated by the Howard Lake Lions, Howard Lake Legion, Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District, Howard Lake Orphans and the Waverly Lions Club. The cost of the sprinkler system was $15,000.

Also at Memorial Park, a new baseball announcer's booth was constructed. Sam Gruenhagen designed and built the building with materials donated by the Howard Lake Lions, Howard Lake Legion, Howard Lake Orphans, and Jay Pettit Painting. The cost for this project was $2,000.

A new public address system was also installed at the football field at Memorial Park. The system was donated by the Howard Lake Lions, Howard Lake Legion and the Waverly Lions Club. The system can be used for football and baseball games. The cost of the new public address system was $2,200.

Lions Park also saw some major improvements. A new bathroom facility was built for the swimming beach, public boat landing, and the park. The bathroom facility was donated by the Howard Lake Lions Club and the Howard Lake Sportsmen's Club. The cost of the bathrooms was $45,000.

The Lions Park shelter got a new roof, which was also donated by the Howard Lake Lions Club. The new roof was $1,300. Jay Pettit Painting Co. painted the shelter with paint and labor donated by Jay Pettit.

The total cost of these projects was over $68,500. The projects were all done with the intention of improving the quality of life for the citizens in the area and their guests. We appreciate those individuals, organizations, and friends and relatives who donated their time, energy and experience to get these projects completed.
