Winsted softball team places in state event

Jimmy's Pizza of Winsted an 11 and 12 year old girls fastpitch softball team placed third at the Tier I Class Rec State Tournmant held on Aug. 1 and 2 at Elk River.

Jimmy's Pizza won four games and lost two at the 24-team tournament.

Game 1, Aug. 1

Winsted won their first game by a 3-1 score. Cara Mochinski pitched five strong innings and Erin Dickhausen pitched two in relief.

Leading hitters were Cara Mochinski 2 hits, Erin Dickhausen and Betsy Simons one hit each.

Game 2, Aug. 1

In game two Winsted had 7 errors and lost to the tournament runner-up by a 12-5 score. Getting hits for Winsted were Erin Dickhausen, Elizabeth Dahl and Amy Anderson. Mochinski and Dickhausen pitched for Winsted.

Game 3, Aug. 1

In their third game Winsted played their best game of the season winning in eight innings. Orono took a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Winsted tied the score in the fifth on a walk by Jessie Fiecke and a double by Cara Mochinski.

Erin Dickhausen drove in the winning run in the eighth with a base hit down the left-field line.

Jackie Laxen also had a hit in the game. Erin Dickhausen pitched a complete game striking out eight while walking only 2.

Game 4, Aug. 2

In game four Winsted came back from 8-2 in the third inning to win 12-11 over Cloquet the tourmnament favorite.

Winsted scored five in the fifth inning for their first lead of the game at 10-8, then held on for the win.

Cara Mochinski and Erin Dickhausen pitched for Winsted.

Leading hitters were Erin Dickhausen, Cara Mochinski, Jackie Laxen, Betsy Simons, and Amy Anderson with a hit each.

Game 5, Aug. 2

In the semi-final game Winsted lost to the tournament champion Hermantown.

Winsted was behind 9-3 after four innings before they scored 3 in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 9-6. Winsted's comeback came up short for a 10-7 lose.

Erin Dickhausen and Cara Mochinski shared the pitching duties. Leading hitters were Erin Dickhausen 2 hits, Betsy Simons and Amy Anderson 1 hit each.

Game 6, Aug. 2

Rosemount 2 0 0 0 0 0 5 7 4 2

Winsted's bat came alive in the third place game to lead them to a 9-7 win over Rosemount. The game ended with a double-play on a ball to shortstop Jackie Laxen, a throw to Amy Anderson at firstbase and a throw to thirdbaseman Betsy Simons for a tag on the runner.

This ended Rosemount's comeback attempt and secured third place for Winsted.

Erin Dickhausen pitched a complete game for the win.

Getting base hits were Erin Dickhausen, Cara Mochinski, Jackie Laxen, Elizabeth Dahl, Amy Anderson, Nicole Caouette and Chrissie Guggemos.

Other team members were Jessie Fiecke, Betsy Simons, Laura Laxen, Molly Rasset, Krissy Schoenfelder, Krystal Fiecke and Kayse Kruschke. Jimmy's Pizza was coached this season by Joe Rasset and Mike Guggemos.

Earlier this season Jimmy's Pizza placed fourth at the North Minnetonka League Tournament, they finished their season with a 18 wins 7 losses and 1 tie record.
