Student pursues art career

Sarah Mapes, a Dassel-Cokato High School senior and the great-granddaughter of Amelia Cochran of Howard Lake, is banking her future on art.

She already has an art piece on display at the Dassel Area Historical Society. She entered the painting as part of the talent presentation of last year's Miss Dassel contest.

Mapes has won several awards and plans to develop her talent at the Minneapolis Art Institute of Minnesota in Minneapolis beginning in July. She is enrolled in the school's two-year graphic design program.

Mapes works in pencil, color pencil, light charcoal, and paints. She prefers drawing from photographs or magazine pictures with a plain old No. 2 pencil.

Mapes is also the granddaughter of Lois Berg of Cokato.
