When the housing development Winsted on the Lake was annexed into the city last year, it increased the city size by 49 acres.
At its completion, the development will have 157 housing units in a combination of twinhomes, townhomes, and single family homes.
Bill Gilk of Eden Prairie is the owner/developer of Winsted on the Lake, and said he looked at several towns before choosing Winsted.
"I looked at Buffalo three or four times, but it's mainly a bedroom community," he said. "I was looking for a community that could stand alone (not dependent on workers who commute to the cities).
"Winsted is a vibrant, growing community and has an industry base," he said.
Gilk and his wife, Dorothy, started in land development in 1983. They have completed several projects in Eden Prairie and have another development in Hutchinson.
"Of all the things I've done, I like this best," Gilk said.
The paperwork, planning, and meeting with the city council have taken a year and a half. "It's just now we're getting a product to sell," he said.
Gilk said he is patient about selling the lots and homes.
"This is a long term investment," he said.
