Winstock sewage going to Hutch next year

Winsted City Council was faced Wednesday with a lingering bill from Winstock caused by the increased size of the country music festival and the use of portable toilets.

The city's problem resulted from Winstock's sewage being dumped into the city's sewer system.

The sewage from the portable toilets was filled with chemicals which keep them sanitary. Those chemicals ended up killing organisms which the city needs for its system.

Replacing those organisms took the city 30 days to replace, costing the city about $2,000. The bill was covered by the city because it neither communicated that the sewage could or could not be dumped in the system.

The dumping had been done in the past, but this past summer's festival was large enough to overload the system.

A letter will be sent to the concert organizers asking them to take next year's waste to Hutchinson, which has a system capable of handling it.
