Sheri Hoernemann wins athletic award at St. Catherine’s

At the College of St. Catherine’s annual honors and awards
ceremony, junior Sheri Hoernemann, Lester Prairie High School graduate,
was announced as the Francis T. McCahill Athlete of the Year. The award
criteria includes athletic talent, team leadership, academic success, sportswomanship,
and dedication to the college and the athletics program.

For the first time in the 14-year history of this award,
the selection committee decided that two athletes who embody these characteristics
must be recognized. Along with Hoernemann, junior Lynette Drexler was also
chosen for the award.

Hoernemann has been termed the “energizer bunny”
of the athletic department by athletic director Sheila Brown, due to the
fact that she has been a key contributor in each of the three sports she
participates in, and she moves from sport to sport without missing a beat.
Her coaches characterize her as a strong defensive player, mentally tough
and always willing to fight to the end and give 110 percent effort. As her
volleyball coach, Kay Lawton, says, “Sheri is one of the best defensive
players I’ve had in 20 years of coaching. She is very willing to try what
coaches ask of her, a coach’s dream.”

Hoernemann was co-captain of both the volleyball and basketball
teams this year and was named co-captain in each for next year. She has
earned the basketball team’s hustle award for the past three years, has
earned best defense and best team spirit in volleyball, and most improved
in softball. She has been a key starter in all three sports and played a
total of 87 games during the year.

In basketball, Hoernemann led the team in assists and steals,
and led the starters in field goal percentage.

In volleyball, she led the team in total digs and was second
on the team in assists.

She plays outfield in softball and has recorded 42 putouts.
She is ranked third on the team in fielding. Her softball coach, Madge Makowske,
says “Sheri demonstrates tenacious effort and never gives less than
her best. Her commitment to softball has been a tremendous asset to the
team and her animation a source of motivation.”

Hoernemann was a three-sport standout in basketball, softball,
and volleyball at Lester Prairie High School. She was a captain and all-conference
in each sport and earned most valuable player honors in both basketball
and volleyball.

She is currently majoring in exercise science at the College
of St. Catherine.
