Cake, candles, a party at the pool

By OPAL "GRANDMA" HABISCH

I am 10 years old today and I am going to have a birthday party. I have asked all my friends to come to a hotel with me where they have a big swimming pool.

Now that we are 10 years old, we will be allowed to go into the hot tub and swim in the big pool. Children under 10 are only allowed in the kid's small pool.

Mother will bring a lunch for all my friends at the party. We will play games for prizes and I will have a big birthday cake.

Last year, I had a birthday party at a hotel with a swimming pool also. We swam for a little while and then my mother said, "Come, children, get dressed and we will play some games."

Some of us just pulled our sweats on over our swimsuits and we started to play tag. Some of the mothers of my friends were there helping to get the lunch set up.

All at once one of the children yelled and scared everyone. The cake flew up in the air and landed upside down on the table. There was cake and candles all over.

The kids started picking up pieces of cake and eating them. The mothers looked at each other and then they started to laugh.

"Go ahead, eat it," my mother said. They put the birthday candles back in the cake and lit them. Then everyone sang "Happy Birthday" to me.

The kids had their faces full of cake and my mother took pictures of us. It was fun to eat my cake before we ate the sandwiches and pop. We had a great time.

Swimming is my favorite thing to do. I can swim like a fish, because we live by a lake and I get lots of practice. When I was only three years old, my dad took me to swimming lessons at the YMCA. Now I can swim underwater and I can even jump off a big diving board.

Every spring, I can hardly wait for the snow to melt so we can go swimming in the lake. Last year, I was the first one to go in the water. It was ice cold.

Swimming is fun, but be careful. Never go out in deep water if you are swimming all alone. It is important to have someone there to get help if you get into trouble.

I can't wait to get into the pool at the hotel with my friends. It's going to be a great birthday!
