2000 basketball shoot-out Sept. 9 in Howard Lake

Anyone 68 years or older can participate in a three-point basketball shoot-out at the Fifth Avenue tennis and basketball court, across from St. James School, Howard Lake, Saturday, Sept. 9, 10 a.m.

Participants must be 68 years of age and need to show a valid driver's license as proof.

Each participant will take three shots, the number of shots made will determine the winner. Following the shoot-out the winner will receive a free meal at Red's Restaurant at a special winner's ceremony beginning at noon.

The basketball shoot-out is part of the unofficial activities planned for the Howard Lake High School class of 1950 reunion. A reunion banquet and program will begin at 5 p.m., Sept. 9 at the American Legion Club, Howard Lake.

Vic Gruenhagen and John Eddy, members of the 1949 basketball team from Howard Lake High School, will shoot-out, along with any other eligible persons.

In a 1998 shoot-out at the local high school gym, Eddy defeated Gruenhagen. Gruenhagen will be out to avenge his loss, so come see this battle between these "old-time athletes."

Eddy is practicing for this game at his basketball court in Denton, Texas. His best, recently, was four shots in a row from 28 feet.

Gruenhagen is practicing at his local farm and promises to bring home the trophy, from Texas to Minnesota.

An actual trophy will be granted to the winner to put into the local high school trophy case to commemorate the 2000 championship basketball shoot-out.
