The boys of summer, circa 1947
Between Dick Mattson of Buffalo and Bob Decker
of Waverly, the boys of summer were identified.
Decker, also one of the players, said that
Zip Zeller and Jack Rogers were from Waverly and Pauly Martinson
was originally from Waverly. Ernie Sowata, he said, was from
Holdingford.
Mattson recalled that Tom Jolicoeur was a
left-handed pitcher and Zeller was the best third baseman in
Minnesota at that time.
His accolades for the team continued. Gib
Main was a great first baseman, he said, and Decker was just
great wherever he played. Mattson remembered Jack Reinhart hitting
many baseballs in Waverly Lake, most of which probably were never
found.
Mattson said he was just a teenager at the
time, but loved baseball.
