HLWW music star in all-state band

By Andrea Vargo

As a sixth grade student in the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted (HLWW) music program, Candice Berg said she just wanted to play a brass instrument like her dad and brother.

As a sophomore at HLWW High School, Berg was recently chosen to play with the Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) All-state Band.

This honor is considered the state tournament for high school musicians.

Music is a family tradition in the Berg household, HLWW Band Director Charles Roux noted.

Roux, who directs the Mid Minnesota Concert Band, said Berg has played in it since she was in the seventh grade.

Her dad and brother both play in the band, and her mother and several relatives used to play in it, he said.

"Candy sings in the choir and plays piano in the jazz band," Roux said.

"Last year was her first year to compete at the state level in the solo and ensemble competition, and she was chosen Best of Site. She was awarded the same honor this year," he said.

How do you get to be in the all-state band?

Across the state in March, 2,400 students competed in auditions at 22 separate sites to fill 564 spots in all-state bands, jazz ensemble, orchestra, or choirs.

All-state begins for Berg with a six-day camp, Aug. 7-12, at Concordia College.

Students at each camp will rehearse more than 30 hours in large group and sectionals during the week.

Various enrichment activities are also offered to the students, as well as master classes and small group sessions. Nearly 50 high school and college music teachers assist the conductors at the camps as sectional coaches.

The camp ends with a recording session and performance for friends, relatives, community members, and teachers.

Students reconvene Feb. 16-17, 2001, for more rehearsals and a performance at Orchestra Hall in conjunction with the MMEA mid-winter in-service clinic.

The honor does not come easily, said Roux.

"It's very competitive and you've got to be good," he said.

Berg has an excellent work ethic and she is very talented, Roux added.
