FFA chapter has 5 teams at state competition
This year's 71st Minnesota State FFA Convention was held at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus April 30 - May 2.
The Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted FFA Chapter attended with 24 members. The chapter was accompanied by Jake Diers who served as chaperone.
The theme this year was The New Era of Excellence, which the FFA would like to build on for the new century.
The chapter had five teams participate at the state level.
The poultry team placed 18th and included Andrew Hirsch, Pat Lorentz, Pat Bakeberg and Jason Bakeberg. They received a silver ribbon.
Tony Lorentz, Tiffany Olson, Adam Graczyk, and Shannon Berg competed on the nursery/landscape team. They took sixth place and received a gold ribbon.
The dairy team of Brittany Boehlke, Alyssa Youngren, Andrew Sorsoleil and Tony Bakeberg also brought home a gold, taking 17th place.
Another team that finished with a gold in 13th place was the fish and wildlife team of Eric Sawatzke, Turner Sawatzke, Tom Bobrowske, and Pat Salonek.
Eric Sawatzke participated in the creed speaking contest and placed fifth.
Small animals team placed 30th at state and received a bronze.
Tiffany Olson in Specialty Animals Entreprenuership and Tony Lorentz in Ag Sales and Service Placement received runners-up for their state proficiency awards. They both received a plaque and a medal for their accomplishments.
The chapter was recognized for our total cumulative contribution over the years of $40,000 and a achievement award of $2,500 for this year.
Two members attended as delegates, Alicia Wiegert and Emily Diers, who accepted the chapter's awards and attended workshops at convention.
Pat Lorentz and Tony Bakeberg both attended a conference and applied for a scholarship for their trip in June to the annual Washington Leadership Conference.
Tom Lorentz received his state FFA degree. His parents, Terry and Eugene Lorentz, along with the Superintendent Riley Hoheisel were also able to attend the ceremony.
Emma Fowler and Mike Broll participated in the state FFA band performing at Northrup Auditorium, and The Mall of America.
