Winsted girls 14-and-under fastpitch team places 4th in state
The Winsted girls 14 and under fastpitch softball team ended their season as league champions, and placed fourth in state competition.
The season started on Memorial Day weekend with a pool play tournament at the Hollywood Sports Complex. The team was 2-1 overall in the tournament and took home the third place trophy.
The following Monday, the 16-game league season began. The team went undefeated in league play due to excellent pitching, strong defense, and solid hitting. They outscored their opponents 224 to 52, for an average margin of victory of 11 runs.
The team was seeded number one for the league tournament. They finished the tournament 4-0 with victories over Becker #1, Rockford, Buffalo, and lastly, Annandale Green for the championship. All victories were by 8 runs.
Due to the team winning the league championship tournament, they received a number one seating at the state Class "D" tournament in Hutchinson. The caliber of the state tournament teams was greatly improved.
The Winsted team went 3-2 in the tournament. They were 2-0 on Saturday with victories over Cottage Grove and St. Paul Westside. On Sunday, the team lost their first game, 7-6, to Perham. The loss put them in the loser's bracket and forced them to play games back-to-back for the remainder of the tournament.
Their first opponent was Willmar, and they defeated them 5-4. That brought them up against St. Paul Westside for a rematch. The game was a defensive battle that was won by St. Paul Westside 2-1.
The Winsted team was given a plaque for their fourth place finish and individual medals were given to team participants.
The team ended their season with a 25-3 record. The three losses were by a combined 4 runs.
