HL gymnast wins state championship
Corbin Johnson of Howard Lake won the Level Five State Gymnastics Championship March 25 with a score of 52 out of a possible 60 points to take the All Around title.
Corbin, a seventh grader, competed against boys from fourteen clubs throughout the state.
He also won four individual event titles, including pommel horse, still rings, parallel bars, and spring floor.
Johnson started out well, scoring first on his first two events. He posted a 9.5 on the rings, but then ran into trouble.
After a tough routine on the parallel bars, (8.5) and a sub-par vault (9.3), Johnson fell during his high bar routine on a "mini giant" and received a 1-point deduction, which put his lead into jeopardy.
Starting his final event, spring floor, Johnson dug down deep and hit a club record 9.5. Johnson beat his nearest competitor by seven tenths of a point and cemented his all-around victory.
Corbin competes for North Shore Gymnastics of Long Lake, where Dale Bullivant of Dassel is the head coach. Bullivant's teams had an exceptional state meet.
They captured three state team titles and four individual state titles. The North Shore Level Five Boys are now 7-0 and will move on to regional competition at Hawkeye Arena at the University of Iowa Friday, April 14. There are expected to run into stiff competition with other teams from Iowa, Nebraska, and Wisconsin.
