Alvina Fiecke another busy Holy Trinity volunteer
Alvina Fiecke has been active as a volunteer in both the school and parish for many years.
She is now a member of the Liturgy and Spiritual Life Committee, where she helps plan parish Masses, decorates the church, and is responsible for maintaining candles in the church for special intentions.
She helped in the high school office for five years as an assistant, where she answered phones and helped with paperwork.
Besides helping at the Holy Trinity school and parish, she also volunteers at St. Mary's Care Center. On Wednesday afternoons she helps with Bingo; Thursday mornings, she serves juice and coffee to patients before taking them to Mass at the chapel; and after services, she brings them to the dining room.
She co-chaired the Bloodmobile for 15 years, where she was responsible for setting up and getting help for the event.
Alvina is a retired registered nurse, who worked at St. Mary's Hospital for 15 years and then, in Dr. Tom Kiefer's Winsted office for an additional 17 years.
For 30 years she lived on a dairy farm just outside of Winsted. Twenty-eight of those years on the farm were with her husband Lawrence, who died in 1990. For two additional years, she and her son managed the farm until it was sold.
In 1992, she moved from the farm to town. She did volunteer work while working and living on the farm, but after her move to town and retirement, she was able to donate even more of her time to others.
When asked why she is willing to give up so much of her time for volunteer work she replied, "It makes me feel good and I like helping other people."
In her spare time, Alvina crochets afghans and embroiders dishtowels. She loves to play cards with friends and belongs to a card group that meets once a month to play Sheephead.
She also has 15 grandchildren ranging in age from 2 months to 21 years and spends a lot of her spare time and her "best time" babysitting.
