Diers receives highest karate award

Brenda Diers, a member of the Winsted Karate Club, recently received the Gold Tiger Award given for the most inspirational student in the American Shotokan Karate Federation. Brenda was selected from over 15 other applicants for the award.

The annual meeting and banquet was July 24 in Brookings, So. Dak. to wrap up a four-day training camp.

The camp provides certification for instructors and to provide students with a high intensity training on kihon (basic technique), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).

Those attending from Winsted were Dr. James Neff, Louis Stifter, Brent Matter, Jill Fleischacker, Del O'Loughlin, Brian Neff, Jeff Horrocks, Mary Horrocks, Brenda Diers, Luke Erickson, Brandon Diers, and Samantha Welch.

Dr. Neff was also recognized for his involvement and work with international karate for the organization.

The Winsted club trains Monday and Thursday evenings from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Winsted Elementary School.
