Lester Legion team advances to third district tournament
With wins over Sibley East, Belle Plaine, and New Germany in the Third District "League A" American Legion baseball playoffs, Lester Prairie's Post 463 American Legion team qualified for the Third District American Legion Tournament and an opportunity to gain a berth in the state tournament.
LeSueur-Henderson 3, Lester Prairie 1
In the first round of the third district tournament, played in Arlington July 24, Lester lost a close one to LeSueur-Henderson 3-1.
LeSueur got on the board first scoring one run in the bottom of the first on one hit and one Lester error. Lester tied the game 1-1 in the top of the fourth on a single by Joel Gueningsman to score Dan LaMott from second base.
With the game turning into a pitchers duel tied at 1-1, Lester's starter Cullen Schultz tired in the fifth and LeSueur scored two runs on one hit, two walks, one hit batter, and a well-executed suicide squeeze to go up and eventually win the game 3-1.
Against a fine hurler, Lester managed four hits, two by Gueningsman and one each by Schultz and shortstop David Rehmann.
On the mound, Schultz allowed two earned runs, four hits, three base on balls, and struck out eight in four and one third innings of work. In a 1 2/3-inning relief stint, right-hander David Rehman pitched well, allowing no runs on two hits and one strike out.
Lester Prairie 9, New Germany 8
Facing an early exit in the second round of the double elimination tournament, Lester nabbed an exciting 9-8 win over league-rival New Germany, eliminating them from the tournament, in Arlington, July 25.
In the game, Lester starter LaMott was mowing down New Germany batters while Lester held a commanding 7-3 lead after six complete innings of play. Then, in the top of seventh, New Germany fired back, scoring five runs on two Lester errors and three hits, to go up by one run 8-7.
With three outs left and facing and end to their season, Lester showed their character and posted two runs on two walks, a hit batter, an RBI grounder by LaMott, and a game-winning single by Gueningsman to win the game 9-8 and move on in the tournament.
Lester's third round game in the tournament was scheduled for Friday, July 30, in Arlington, against Kenyon.
Other players on the Lester team include Robert Parpart, Gregg Kohler, Shawn Kohler, Adam Birkholz, Josh Eckstein, Corey Quast, Simon Giesen, Jason Ide, Joe Hendrickson, and Brent Kritzeck.
Coaches are Daryl and Daryn Hoof and Mark Detlefsen is manager.
