Orphans continue winning ways

With an Orphan sweep of Buffalo, 7-3 and 10-4, the local baseball team qualified for the Region 11C tournament.
Orphans 7, Buffalo 3
The Orphans jumped off to a 1-0 inning lead and then added three more in the fourth, including a Kevin Werner solo home run, to lead off the inning.
Buffalo scored three straight runs to cut the lead to one, but Howard Lake added insurance by scoring one in the sixth and two in the eighth for their first playoff win.
Jake Streich pitched a great game going 7 1/3 innings and only giving up two earned runs. Shane Heber came in to get the save, hurling a scoreless 1 2/3 innings.
Mike Gagnon went 3-for-5 with two RBI on the night. Jay Reddemann and Jon Stueven both had two hits on the night. Ben Borrell, Russ Green, Nic Main, Mark Stueven, and Kevin Werner had one hit each.
Orphans 10, Buffalo 4
The Orphans played another solid game and took the series 2-0 from Buffalo with good pitching and 14 hits. Buffalo led 3-1 after three innings, but Chad Burau tied the game on his two-run homer in the fourth.
Buffalo took the lead at 4-3 after the bottom of the fifth, but the Orphans just wouldn't die and scored six runs in the top of the seventh. In that inning five straight batters reached base without an out.
The Orphans easily shut down Buffalo in the late innings behind another save by Shane Heber who didn't allow a run. Chad Gagnon got the win going six innings.
Kevin Werner had an excellent day at the plate going 4-for-5 with two RBI. Mike Gagnon also had a good day going 3-for-5. Borrell and Tom Herda each had a couple of hits on the day. Burau, Green, and Jon Stueven had one hit each.
Region 11C tourney
Six teams will be competing for two state tournament bids in the double elimination tournament over the next two weeks at Litchfield.
If the Orphans are runner-up to Litchfield in the three-game series this past weekend, their first game in Region 11C will be Thursday, Aug. 5 at 7:30 p.m. If the Orphans defeated Litchfield, they will play Friday, Aug. 6 at 7:30 p.m.
