St. Mary's School reunion brings hundreds to Waverly
Recently, church doors were opened and the bells of St. Mary's in Waverly rang out. Musicians Ginny Claessens-McDonald, Mary Kay Herbst-Johnson and the Borrell boys led the congregation singing their song, "The Bells of St. Mary's."
They gathered for St. Mary's School all class reunion. The last graduating class was in 1969.
More than 500 former students, nuns, priests, and family members filled St. Mary's Church, Waverly, to more than capacity for a mass at noon. A former St. Mary's student, and current priest in Rush City, Minn., the Rev. Ralph Huar, celebrated mass, with classmate altar boys Val "Pooch" LePage and Tony Klingelhoets of Waverly at his side.
Following worship, the group convened to Waverly Legion Waterfront Park for an afternoon and evening of stories, reminiscing, photos, food and fun.
Bob "Zip" Zeller of Waverly (class of 1943) led the program with comments on the history of the church and school.
Gerry Meehan-Smith, Lorraine Fitzpatrick-Kittock, Mary Herbst Johnson, Norma Austin Ogle, Betty Stifter Reinert, Margaret Rogers Kutz, and Alice Klingelhoets Larson all of Waverly helped organize the event.
