Winsted building permits top $1 million in one month

"This is the first time in Winsted history that we have had well over $1 million in building permits for just one month," said City Clerk Betty Zachmann at Tuesday's council meeting.

The actual amount for building permits issued from March 15 to April 15 was $1,419,079. Zachmann said the majority of this amount can be attributed to the town's local manufacturers.

Scherping Systems, who was issued a building permit valued at $626,333, is one point in case.

Minnesota's Department of Trade and Economic (DTED) Development approved a $150,000 Small Cities Development award to the City of Winsted. Under the program's lending rules, the city will in turn loan $150,000 to Scherping Systems.

The loan will be used towards a proposed expansion project which involves the construction of 17,200 square feet and the purchase of new equipment. In turn, Scherping Systems will create 30 new jobs within the next two years and the loan will be forgiven.

Scherping Systems is a manufacturer of specialty equipment for manufacturing stainless steel equipment used in making cheese.

Winsted Mayor Floyd Sneer said, "The expansion by Scherping Systems will not only allow it to better compete with other competitors in a business sense; it will also create quality jobs in the Winsted area and increase our local tax base."

Gene Goddard of DTED said the additional jobs will mainly be shop machinists and office staff.

Millerbernd Design and Fabrication (MDF) is also experiencing a growth spurt.

"It's expansion time. Sales have increased and we need space and more people," said Brad Millerbernd of MDF.

A manufacturer of equipment for the food and dairy industry, as well as custom fabrication and design, MDF has a building permit valued at $200,000 to add on 12,000 square feet. The area will house a new laser machine to be used for cutting metal.
