Animal shelter to open in McLeod County
Plans are underway for a fund-raiser to benefit the Heart of Minnesota Animal Shelter.
Proceeds from the fund-raiser, Walk for the Animals 2001, will be used for the new animal shelter in McLeod County.
This year's goal is to raise $5,000. It is the hope that all expenses of the event will be underwritten by sponsors, allowing all walk-day pledges to go directly to the animals.
Different levels of sponsorship are available:
· Corporate - $500 and above
· Business - $250 - $499
· Supporter - $100 - $249
· Donor - $50 - $99
The animal walk will take place Saturday, May 19 at the McLeod County Fairgrounds. Registration is set for 9 a.m., with the walk beginning at 10:15.
Until recently, there has not been an animal shelter in McLeod County. If stray animals are picked up, an attempt would be made to take them to a shelter in another community such as Long Lake, Buffalo, or Litchfield.
The new shelter will be located in the hazardous waste materials building in Hutchinson. Remodeling work is still in progress.
Once the shelter is ready for occupancy, it will be able to house 20 dogs, and quite a few cats.
There are already volunteers lined-up, so when the shelter opens, the staff will be ready to go to work.
The animal shelter staff is made of all volunteers; there are not any paid employees.
