Artmann not guilty in Pool case
By Gail Lipe
A Dakota County jury found Mary Alice Barbara Artmann, 18, of Silver Lake not guilty of aiding and abetting kidnapping-causing great bodily harm on Monday evening.
Artmann was charged in connection with the 1999 death of Randy M. Pool of Hutchinson.
Pool's body was found in in a duffle bag in the Clearwater River on July 28, 1999. He was held against his will and repeatedly beaten and tortured in his home in Hutchinson for approximately three days before his death.
The trial began with jury selection on Jan. 29, and continued with testimony throughout the week. Several witnesses testified that they saw Artmann at the Pool residence on July 18, but according to the Hutchinson Leader, only one witness, Kristopher Olson, said Artmann kicked Pool during an escape attempt by Pool.
Closing arguments were presented on Monday morning, and the jury began deliberation at 1:30 p.m. The not guilty verdict was delivered to the court by the end of the day.
Six defendants were previously sentenced with various charges for the kidnapping and murder of Pool. Two others await trial, Salem M. Bernhardt, 25, and Scott Randolf Bernhardt, 20. Their next court appearance will be on Feb. 16.
