Canoe accident takes life

Three women were in a canoe on Lake Sylvia near Annandale
June 2, when the craft overturned. All three were wearing life jackets and
swam to the nearest shoreline.

As they approached the shore, Sarah Gene Ekstrand, 34,
of Minneapolis, complained to her companions that she was cold and tired,
according to the sheriff’s office. As her friend was helping her to shore,
she collapsed and lost consciousness.

The North Ambulance out of Annandale arrived on the scene
and performed CPR.

However, Ekstrand was pronounced dead by a deputy Wright
County Coroner.

Sheriff’s deputies interviewed companions and witnesses.
An autopsy was to be conducted by the coroner’s office to determine the
cause of death, said the sheriff’s office.
