Herald, Journal have new owners

The Howard Lake-Waverly Herald and Winsted-Lester Prairie Journal newspapers were sold, effective Nov. 30, to Chris Schultz and Amy Hoese-Schultz of Lester Prairie and Dale and Linda Kovar of Watertown.

The newspapers have been owned by Bill Ramige of Glencoe since 1986, when he acquired them from Floyd and JoAnn Sneer of Winsted. The new corporation will be known as Herald Journal Publishing.

Both Chris Schultz and Dale Kovar will continue their respective positions. Schultz joined the papers in 1992 as a reporter and took over as advertising manager a few months later. Kovar became editor of the Winsted Journal in 1983, and general manager in 1986.

The Schultzes have two daughters: Abbigayle, 3, and Emily, almost 2. The Kovars have four children: Chelsea, 15; Alyssa, 12; Kip, 9; and Rhett, 3.

Among changes planned are increased staff in sales and sports coverage, and creation of Herald Journal Guide and Directory Services, which will offer new specialty publications in addition to the marketing and media planning the company already provides.
