LP kindergarten schedule likely to be all-day, every other day

By Lynda Jensen

Restructuring of staff positions and switching the kindergarten schedule were the highlights of a special meeting for the Lester Prairie School Board May 2.

Board members decided to try an all-day, every-other-day schedule for kindergartners for the 2002-03 school year, said Supt. James Redfield said.

This means kindergartners will attend Monday, Wednesday, and every other Friday or Tuesday, Thursday and every other Friday, Lukens said.

However, Redfield indicated that the final decision will not be made until the regular board meeting, Monday, May 20.

To discuss the subject with parents, a meeting will be conducted tonight (Monday), from 7 to 8 p.m. in the kindergarten room at Lester Prairie Elementary.

The move would save between $10,000 and $13,000 in transportation costs per year, if implemented, Redfield said.

The savings is related to bussing at noon time, he said.

A decline in enrollment and fund balances is also the driving force behind changes in staffing, Redfield said.

Two positions were affected for next year, a third grade teaching position and the social studies position.

The social studies position will likely be combined to serve other areas, such as counseling, Redfield said.

The third grade teaching position was funded by the federal class size reduction money, which will not be available any longer, he said. It will be funded locally, Redfield said.
