McLeod County Historical Society celebrates 50 years
By Julie Yurek
How much was the starting salary for a teacher and superintendent in Lester Prairie in 1952?
The McLeod County Historical Society knows the answer: $2,500 for the teacher, and $4,600 for the superintendent.
The Historical Society has many interesting facts, pictures, and historical items it would like to share with the public when it celebrates 50 years of existance Friday, June 21 and Sunday, June 23. Saturday, June 22, the museum will be open earlier than ususal, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Friday kicks off with a pork chop supper from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m at the Historical Museum, and Wally Pikal, Bev Wangerin, and Danny Totushek will play music that evening. Antique machinery and 50s-era cars will be on display.
Proceeds from the pork chop dinner will go toward a Microfilm Reader/Printer. Funds will be matched by AAL Branch 5131, Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Hutchinson.
Sunday's events events start at 1 p.m. and continues until 7p.m. that night.
Activities include a hula hoop contest, Elvis impersonation contest, a 1950s trivia game shows, contests, photo booth, a sock hop, and much more.
Music includes the Hutchinson Community Choir, a Barbershop quartet, and the Cogley Sisters.
Several food stands will also be available during the day.
The McLeod County Historical Society was formally established in 1940, and was reorganized and incorporated in 1952, with a new constitution and bylaws that combined town chapters into one united society.
During the past 50 years, the historical society has grown to more than 300 members.
The mission of the McLeod County Historical Society is dedicated to connecting with the past, understanding the present, and making informed choices about the future by finding, perserving, explaining and sharing McLeod County history.
Volunteers are still needed for the two-day event. Also, if anyone has a photo of events, people, business, or anything from the last 50 years through 2002, the society would like a copy. Photos can be dropped off or mailed to the McLeod County Museum, 380 School Road NW, Hutchinson, MN 55350.
Museum hours are Monday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m.
