Couple marries before deployment overseas
By Julie Yurek
Newlywed and National Guard member Terry Berg, 21, of Winsted, was deployed Jan. 29, and is headed to Colorado for training and then to southwest Asia.
Berg was a member of the HCC Company 682nd combat engineer battalion located in Willmar until Dec. 11, when he and a few other men from the Willmar area were activated and reassigned to the Company C, 142nd heavy engineer battalion.
Berg and his wife, Stacy (Bebo), 20, were married two days later, Dec. 13, at the Glencoe court house.
The wedding was scheduled for May 22, 2004, but was moved up when he was activated.
The couple is planning a "renewal of vows" at Holy Trinity Church in Winsted on their originally planned wedding date.
"I bought a dress a few months before he was activated," Stacy said.
The couple was told he could go anytime after Dec. 11, but that he would be in the United States for at least six weeks after he left Minnesota because he needed shots, Stacy said.
The unit was alerted for deployment Jan. 20. Berg is now in training at Fort Carson in Colorado, Stacy said. Now that he is activated, he is part of the Army instead of the National Guard.
Berg was told that he will probably be gone about a year, but that the duration can be either shortened or lengthened, Stacy said.
"I'm planning for this wedding, but I don't know if he's going to be here," she said. "I kind of need him."
She has talked with him since the deployment ceremony at Camp Ripley, she said. "I just try to take it day by day."
Stacy, Berg's mom and dad Kari and Terry, sisters Shannon and KaLeigh, and brother Steven, were at the ceremony to see him off. Berg's younger sister, Hallie Jo, was unable to attend.
The 142nd battalion is a 145 person unit that specializes in construction and maintenance of buildings, roads, and air strips.
Berg's job is a wrecker operator, which means he operates construction equipment. He will be helping construct a base overseas, Stacy said.
Berg joined the National Guard in 1999 and attended basic training in August 2000, after graduating from Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School in 2000.
Stacy is a 2001 Holy Trinity graduate. She attends Ridgewater College in Hutchinson and works at the Lester Prairie Vet Clinic.
