Country Treasures burglarized before it opens

By Ryan Gueningsman

Before even opening its doors for business for the first time, Country Treasurers, formerly Treasure Hunt, had a burglary.

More than 25 large items with a value in excess of $2,000 was reported missing to the McLeod County Sheriff's Department April 7.

Items taken include industrial fans, lockers, shelving, file cabinets, lighted work benches, wheeled carts, work tables, table carts, and carts, said McLeod County Communications Specialist Melba Carlson.

The items had been unloaded from a truck and were sitting outside of the building, said Country Treasures owner Tom Schmidt.

"We're speculating it was taken over the weekend," he said. "We didn't notice the things were gone until Monday."

Schmidt is offering a $500 reward to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Anyone with information may contact the McLeod County Sheriff's Department at 888-440-3134.
