Fireworks, Kids' Parade to set off Waverly Daze

By Lynda Jensen

The annual boat parade, tractor parade, and for the first time ever, a kids' parade will highlight Waverly Daze Friday through Sunday, July 11 through 13.

The kids' parade will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Waverly Railroad Park Saturday. Young people ages 0 to 18 are welcome to participate.

Children are encouraged to dress up in costume, decorate a mini float, or just be themselves. Everyone will receive a goodie bag at the kids' parade.

The annual Waverly Lake Boat parade will be Saturday at 3 p.m. on the lake.

Harold Reardon will fire his cannon at 2:30 p.m. to signal everyone for line up by the swimming beach at the southeast end of the lake. Boaters are asked to anchor their boats until the next cannon is heard at 3 p.m. The parade will begin at that time.

There will not be a contest for the best decorated boat as in the past. However, boaters are encouraged to decorate anyway, just for fun. It is not necessary to decorate to be in the parade.

The lead boat will come from the center of the lake and then start to travel west along the south shore. Then all other boats are to follow in single file around the lake. The parade will go around the lake once and end up where they began.

During the boat parade, skiing, speed boating and personal watercraft activities are curtailed.

Waverly's ninth annual fishing contest will also take place Saturday, sponsored by the Waverly Lake Association.

Registration will be 7 to 8 a.m. Saturday, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

Cash prizes and raffle prizes will be awarded, with $200 each for the best northern and walleye, $125 for the best bass, and $50 for the best pan fish.

Second place winners will collect $150 each for the best northern and walleye, $100 for the best bass, and $25 for pan fish. Third place winners will collect $75 for northern and walleye, with $50 given to bass.

Anyone with a fish to weigh in must be in the weigh area by noon. No one will be allowed to enter the weigh-in circle after noon.

The coronation and crowning of the new Miss Waverly will take place Sunday.
