New Germany one of 14 fire depts. called to NYA grass fire

By Troy Feltmann

The New Germany Fire Department assisted 13 other fire departments fighting a major grass fire last Monday evening.

The fire was two miles southeast of Norwood Young America, and started when a farmer was working on a combine, said Steve Van Lith, the New Germany Fire Chief.

Sparks from the combine jumped into some dry grass.

With strong winds, the sparks quickly got of control, burning grass and part of a corn field.

The fire then jumped a gravel road, Salem Avenue, and got into a tree line.

One tractor started on fire. There was no other property damage or injuries.

The New Germany Fire Department was called at 4:30 p.m. to assist with the fire.

"We had 14 firefighters respond to the call," Van Lith said.

After six hours of fighting the fire, New Germany left the scene at 10:30 p.m., he said.
