Three vie for LP school board

Melissa Williams

Why are you running for office?

As a mother of 4 that is using the Lester Prairie School system, I would prefer to be involved and proactive in assuring an educational environment that is up to date, safe and provides optimum opportunity while remaining financially secure and maintaining the small school atmosphere.

What do you think are two major issues at this time and what do you propose to do about them?

A. Referendum: The fact is that there are things that need to be fixed at the school to ensure a functional and safe environment for our children. I will also help to investigate options on how to spend money wisely to help better our children's education.

B. The fact that families are taking their children elsewhere for their education. I would try to find out some of the reasons for people leaving and attempt to bring them back as well as recruit new students.

Why should you be elected?

Job history: factory worker, paraprofessional, program counselor, sold real estate and now do loan originating.

I feel that I have been involved with many situations that I can relate with teachers, students and parents and their needs. I am an open person and can communicate well with most anyone. I feel that an open communication is the best way to get problems solved. My children are the most important things to me and getting a good education is crucial to what their future has to offer them. I would like to see them learning the latest things in technology.

I believe a school should offer a safe yet fun atmosphere. And I believe school should be challenging yet interesting. With that being said, we need to pay our good teachers well, make sure the curriculum is appropriate for the students and utilize the library and computers that we have in a more efficient way (possibly get more computers).

Why are you running for office?

Lester Prairie School needs as much community support as they can get, and this is my way to give my support.

What do you think are two major issues at this time and what do you propose to do about them?

The referendum is the major issue.

If it passes, great. Then the roof issue can be repaired along with the other issues addressed.

If it fails, make the cuts as easy as possible and try to be creative to make those cuts as painless as possible.

Why should you be elected?

I will work hard to maintain what we currently have, and strive to make our school better. The current board has done a great job thus far, and I will do my best to follow in their footsteps.

Bob Remer

Why are you running for office?

I am running for school board re-election because I want to ensure that Lester Prairie continues to meet the needs of the community by offering the best education possible at an affordable price and that all kids have the chance to reach their full potential in a safe, secure environment.

What do you think are two major issues at this time and what do you propose to do about them?

A. Excess levy referendum: The referendum that will be voted upon in November will enable the district to maintain the school building as needed and enhance the technology and curriculum necessary to prepare our children for their future.

B. Possible addition to current building: I would like to encourage the district to continue working in partnership with community members to look for innovative ways to use our current space while exploring all options for expansion.

Why should you be elected?

I have a strong commitment to Lester Prairie education system. I have experience and knowledge gained during the last four years as a school board member.

With two children still attending the high school I have especial interest in resolving the current issues facing the school district.
