Winsted salon owner brings her business home

By Julie Yurek

Longtime hairstylist Leah Mallak is open for business at her home salon.

"It has always been my dream to have a home salon," Mallak said.

Leah's Shear Inspiration and Tanning is located at 616 Hunter Circle, part of the Pheasant Run Addition in Winsted.

Mallak rented a station at Cutting Edge Concept Salon in Waconia for three years.

Prior to that, she worked at a salon in Chaska for three years.

Mallak returned to her station in Waconia after the birth of her daughter Gracie, who was born last March, but while she was there, she and husband Brad decided it was the right time to open up her shop at home.

Construction on the salon began in November, and Mallak opened for business Feb. 5.

Many of her customers from Waconia and Chaska followed her to her new location, she said.

She is also excited to draw local customers, she said.

"Hopefully the weather won't be such a problem for locals as it is for the ones who drive an hour," she said.

Mallak obtained her cosmetology license at Oliver Thein in Burnsville, she said.

Mallak knew from an early age she wanted to get into cosmetology; there is a photo in her salon of her as a five-year-old girl styling her grandfather's hair.

Leah's Shear Inspiration and Tanning offers family hair care, including haircuts, coloring, perms, highlights, waxing, and tanning. Styling products such as Graham Webb, Biolage, and Sebastian are available for purchase.

The salon is open Tuesdays and Thursdays noon to 8 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to noon. The phone number is (320) 485-2377.
