Serial thief unsuccessful in LP

By Ryan Gueningsman

A career thief tried but was unsuccessful at landing any money or merchandise from Angvall Hardware and Mercantile Tuesday.

Lamoine Allen Busse, aka Allen Day, 41, is from the Waseca area, but travels across the central and southern part of the state trying to scam businesses, said Brad Milbrath of the Waseca County Sheriff's Department. He has no driver's license, but has a girlfriend who takes him places.

He walked into Angvall Hardware and Mercantile in Lester Prairie Tuesday morning, said employee Jill Duncan. Store owner Judy Angvall was at the cash register and noticed him come into the store and pick up a sump pump off of a shelf.

"He came up to the counter, asked several questions about it, asked for a different one, and tried to return the one he had in his hand," Duncan said.

Duncan noticed a flyer that had been circulated at a hardware store meeting several months back about Busse, and what his method of operation is.

She went to call the police, while Busse talked to Angvall.

"He (Busse) said he was going to run out to his car and get the receipt, and he never came back," Duncan said.

No one got a look at the car he was driving, Duncan said. The Lester Prairie Police Department quickly sent out a Minnesota Crime Alert Network bulletin in order to alert other local law enforcement agencies and businesses.

"We are asking the city attorney for charges on Busse, and also a warrant for him," said Lester Prairie Police Chief Bob Carlson. "He would be charged with theft by swindle."

This is not the first time Busse has been in trouble for crimes of theft by swindle and attempts of this nature.

He has had prior offenses in Mankato, Blue Earth County, Wells, Fairbault, New Ulm, Waseca, Carver County, Mower County, Sibley County, Owatanna, Hennepin County, Mitchell County, Iowa, and Dane County, Wis.

Busse rarely takes more than $100 worth of merchandise, because that is just a misdemeanor offense, Duncan said.

He was wearing thin rimmed glasses when he was in Angvall's, Duncan said.

If anyone sees Busse, contact police immediately.
