Woman is gathering blankets for love
By David Cox
When Karen Roepke of New Germany leaves for Texas next month, she hopes to have a van full of blankets to take with her.
Roepke said that when she and her husband Gerald began planning the trip to Texas, she saw an opportunity to visit the headquarters of Voices of the Martyrs (VOM) along the way.
The VOM Web site states that it is, "A non-profit, interdenominational organization with a vision for aiding Christians around the world who are being persecuted for their faith in Christ."
"I have supported them for a long time," Roepke said, "So I wanted to stop in and see their headquarters, but I didn't want to go empty handed."
Roepke then came up with the idea of collecting blankets, which she will deliver to VOM to be distributed in one of their projects.
"Blankets of Love" is a VOM project to deliver blankets to refugees in countries such as Sudan.
"It is hot there during the day," Roepke said, but some people don't realize that it can get very cold during the night."
Blankets can be dropped off at the New Germany City Hall during regular business hours. Deadline for dropping off blankets is Feb. 6.
"They are looking for new or used full or queen-sized blankets. Used blankets should be clean and in good condition. They do not want quilts," Roepke said.
