Golf cart supplier opens shop in Montrose
By Liz Hellmann
A partnership between Greg Wencl and Harold Manthey expanded this July with the opening of a new store, Golf Cars and More, in Montrose.
The business is currently leasing the space next to Wheels West RV on the east side of town.
Greg Wencl’s son, Ryan Wencl, manages the Montrose store.“We’re working on becoming the largest dealer in the state, and as far as customer satisfaction we’re number one,” Wencl said.
The duo has been supplying southern Minnesota with golf carts for over 15 years.
The business runs out of the main store in Owatonna, which is managed by Manthey.
In the off-season the Owatonna store holds close to 1,000 golf carts, and is the center for the supplies, stocks, and bookkeeping.
The two other locations include Mankato, which expands the business to the south, and Montrose, expanding it to the west.
Golf Cars and More bought out Deloux Golf/Leisure Cars, which operated in Delano, to give them control over the western side of the state including Hennepin County, Wright County, and parts of Carver County.
The business leases carts to surrounding golf courses, including Whispering Pines, Southbrook, Pioneer Creek, and The Greens in Howard Lake. “All the golf carts you see are leased from someone that someone is us,” Wencl said.
Currently the business employs four semi drivers to haul as many as 24 golf carts at a time to courses as far away as Cambridge.
Its entire customer base does not come solely from golf courses.
“Fifty percent of golf carts are privately owned,” Wencl said. “A lot of our sales go to farmers.”
To meet their customer needs, Golf Cars and More employs about six or seven mechanics, some of whom have been working on golf carts for 20 years.
“We deal in service, parts, and leasing for any kind of cart you can imagine,” Wencl said.
The business also takes old golf carts and trades them in for new ones, much like people trade in their old cars.
“We take the old golf carts from courses and give them new ones, and refurbish the old ones,” Wencl said.
This gives the golf courses a good deal on the carts, and helps Golf Cars and More and to spread their supplier’s name, Easy Go golf carts, throughout the area.
Golf Cars and More is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and Sunday by appointment. The phone number is (763) 972-8600.
