Couple opens Buffalo store for Waverly flowers

By Liz Hellmann

Richard and Marty Stommes of Waverly extended their love of gardening to include their new shop in Buffalo, which opened recently.

The shop is an offshoot of a family owned landscape and gardening business operated out of their home in Waverly for the past 15 years.

Natural Balance Floral and Garden is located on Highway 55 and County Road 35 and carries a large assortment of plants.

The Stommes’ greenhouse used to be open to the public, but now all business aspects are handled through the shop in Buffalo.

They offer estate maintenance, lawn care, garden design, and landscaping.

“We take care of the whole aspect of nature from growing, to planting them in gardens, to maintenance,” Marty Stommes said.

Most of the customer base comes for the western suburbs, including Orono and Medina. They have been working with some of their clients for 15 years.

Marty Stommes bought the business from the previous owner, Beverly Bosak. Bosak and Stommes are old friends who attended high school in Crystal together.

Bosak previously ran the floral shop Designs by Nature out of the building, but urged Stommes to take the business over.

Stommes emptied and redecorated the building. Now Bosak helps Stommes run the new store.

To set them apart from other floral shops in the area, Natural Balance specializes in unusual perennials, gifts, and potted plants. They carry natural bouquets and unique gift ideas.

“There are so many beautiful plants people don’t even know about,” Stommes said. “We are trying to introduce more new and unusual plants to the people than just your average geraniums.”

Now that the shop has opened, Marty Stommes grows the flowers out of her greenhouse at home and transports them to Buffalo for sale in the shop.

Stommes thinks she must have secretly known she was going to open up a floral shop because she collected bows, ribbons and other materials for years before she started the shop. Now she uses the beautiful material to make interesting and unique gifts and floral arrangements for sale.

Richard Stommes handles lawn, landscaping and also helps out with floral deliveries.

The business includes a landscaping crew, a lawn and tree maintenance crew, the gardening and floral shop, and floral delivery. All the employees from the different aspects of their business meet at the shop and from there go out to their customers for landscaping and gardening.

Marty’s son, Justin Martyn, is the foreman for the landscaping crew and his wife Bekki Martyn keeps the books for both the floral shop and the landscaping business.

The Stommes keep busy all year and provide floral services for a number of different occasions, including weddings, funerals, special events and occasions.

The shop is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturdays.

The Stommes urge their customers to come in, not only to buy flowers, but learn about the product, and how to take care of them.
