Many want to keep Pete's Grocery

By Lynda Jensen

Pete's Grocery in Waverly is looking to be sold or possibly close, owner Pete Chmielewski confirmed recently.

The aging grocery store building needs upgrading and he must make a decision soon about whether to invest large amounts of cash for infrastructure or move on, Chmielewski said. He's been operating for 25 years.

This spurred concerned residents to call a community meeting about the issue, set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at the Waverly city office building.

Some residents are interested in coming up with ideas, even if this means thinking about financial help, Doering said.

"It doesn't take much to keep a small business going," commented resident Al Doering.

In fact, if residents made one trip per month to a small business such as Pete's, this would keep the business afloat, Doering said.

Chmielewski confirmed this, adding that he wasn't looking for a sudden influx of several thousand dollars, only enough to keep the business going.
