Chairman Jim Raymond resigns from HLWW board
By Lynda Jensen
Sixteen years of school board service ended with the sudden resignation of Chairman Jim Raymond from the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted school board Tuesday.
Raymond announced the decision following the end of a brief meeting, during which the board approved the teachers' contract for 2003-04.
"I will not take the oath of office," Raymond said, saying that he is resigning his position.
Raymond was re-elected in the fall and was scheduled to begin a new term January, which is when the other board members will take their oaths of office.
Raymond did not make a statement about why he resigned.
His term will be filled by an appointment by the board, which will last two years, commented Supt. George Ladd.
During the 2005 election, a two-year term will probably be added to the ballot to finish out the term, Ladd said.
The board will decide what to do at the next regular meeting Tuesday, Jan. 20 at the Howard Lake media center.
The next two vote getters during the fall election were Tom Hammer and Rob Merritt, both of Howard Lake.
The last time a board member resigned Gene Lorentz in June of 2002, due to his health the board passed over the top vote getter, which was Merritt, to appoint Al Doering, who currently sits on the board.
During the meeting, Raymond thanked the negotiation committee before it approved the teachers' contract. He noted that the contract mirrored the state average for teacher wages
HLWW to present ideas to the state Feb. 20
The resignation is amidst several meetings from subcommittees composed of residents and board members, since the board plans to present a new plan to the state Friday, Feb. 20.
The plan will be the culmination of the subcommittees' work and draw from the considerable information that is already assembled, commented Board Member John Lideen.
Three subcommittees currently exist for HLWW building project, operating levy, and population growth, Lideen said.
There are four subcommittee positions yet to be filled, Lideen noted after the meeting. Residents interested in taking part of the subcommittees are encouraged to contact Lideen at (320) 543-3134.
Committee meetings scheduled are:
· a subcommittee meeting is set 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6 at the HLWW media center in Howard Lake.
· a meeting is set by the whole committee 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15 at the HLWW media center in Howard Lake.
· another meeting is set by the whole committee 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9 at the HLWW media center in Howard Lake.
Odds and ends
In other business, the board:.
· waived the costs of the board meeting, which means that board members will not receive the per diem compensation.
· heard from Doering, who noted that there is plenty of cash on hand and that HLWW has more cash on hand compared to most other districts.
