Jackie Koch of Winsted was selected as the Minnesota FFA state secretary during the 76th annual FFA state convention April 24.

Koch beat 17 other candidates across the state for the position.

As the state FFA secretary, she will be in attendance at numerous camps, conferences and banquets; many times as a presenter or speaker.

She will also serve as a role model for approximately 9,000 FFA members across the state.

She will be the ambassador for the Minnesota FFA Association.

Koch is a senior at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School and will be attending the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities this fall, majoring in food science and agricultural education.

Koch has been involved in many other things throughout her high school career, including National Honor Society, Knowledge Bowl, concert band, golf, student council, drama, senior class presidential committee, and is the valedictorian.

Previous to obtaining the state office, Koch worked diligently as a chapter officer for the last three years, and also served as last year’s Region IV secretary, said Jim Weninger, FFA instructor.

She has also received numerous honors this year including first place in the state food science career development event (CDE), gold medal at the national nursery/landscape CDE, and was selected to be the Region IV star in agribusiness.

For the past month she has been brushing up on her agricultural issues and FFA knowledge because of all the intensive interview process Koch had to undergo.

She took part in a daylong interview process both April 21 and 22. It had eight different rounds consisting of two personal rounds, one situational round, two group interviews, one on agricultural issues, one on knowledge of the FFA, and a written assignment.

After all the tough interviews, she got to introduce herself to all of the Minnesota FFA on the stage of the talent show Sunday night.

Koch was interviewed by one student from each of the eight regions of Minnesota and three adult chairpersons before she was chosen.

She is the daughter of Jim and Janet Koch of Winsted.

A year ago, HLWW student Eric Sawatzke served as the Minnesota State FFA vice president.
