Help wanted: Good Samartitan

By Pastor Steve Olson, Gethsemane of Dassel

In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Mat. 5:16

A neighbor of mine was just being a good Samaritan when he went to rescue two stranded boaters. As a reward for his efforts, he was robbed, beaten and left for dead. Unconscious, Bob Chadwick floated in the St. Lawrence River and there he would have died were it not for some other good Samaritans who came to his rescue.

After an experience like this, one would expect that Bob would never again stop to aid another in need. Yet Bob said if he ever came upon strangers in trouble on the water, he would likely help. “I’d be leery, but I know myself, I probably would.”

These words reveal the heart of a man who knows what it means to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” He is truly a modern day “Good Samaritan.” So I thank God for this Bob. I thank God for the unknown “Good Samaritans” who rescued him and I thank God for all the others who refuse to let the fear of danger keep them from doing what is right.

For these are the ones who keep the light of God’s love burning bright. These are the ones who give us hope by getting involved, and we need them. We need more people to rekindle the flame of hope by letting their light shine.

So my prayer for this day is that God grant us all the heart of a good Samaritan. May God grant that we all be given the courage to get involved and let our light shine so that others who see our good deeds may praise our Father in heaven.
