By Kristen Miller
Staff Writer

To commemorate the 125th anniversary of the Dassel Volunteer Fire Department, a special day is planned for Saturday, July 22.

The day will begin with a scavenger hunt from 9 a.m. to noon for kids 15 and under.

Six small toy fire trucks will be hidden on public property around Dassel to be turned in for antique replicas. Also, to be given away will be six gift certificates for the lucky scavengers.

A parade to honor the fire service will follow at 12:30 starting at Industrial Park and ending at Evangelical Covenant Church.

The parade will feature Dassel’s first fire engine, a 1935 open cab fire truck. The truck is currently owned by the City of Nevis near Park Rapids, Minn.

Also, participating in the parade will be visiting fire departments, a bag pipe band, and floats from local businesses.

The best parade entry will receive a $100 prize and the second best will receive $50.

Anyone interested in entering for the parade is to contact Gerald Bollman at 275-3044.

Following the parade will be a program at the Dassel Ball Park with Tim Farmer, chief of the Coon Rapids Fire Department, as the featured speaker.

A memorial service to honor deceased firefighters will be after the program.

Then, from 4 to 7 p.m. there will be a pork chop feed, also at the ball park, $7 for adults and $5 for kids 10 and under.

During this time, a medical helicopter and the smoke house will be on display. A staged car demolition and evacuation will take place.

Also included will be concession stands and games.

Then, from 8 to 9 p.m. the bluegrass band, Salty Dogs, will take the stage for the first act of the street dance.

At 9 p.m., the raffle will take place with $2,500 for first prize drawing, $1,000 for second prize, and $500 for third prize. Winners need not be present to win.

At dusk, a fireworks display will be in the ball park and then following, the street dance will continue until midnight with the band, Cowboys in Sneakers.
