Grand opening for Midwest Garden CompanyBy Kristen Miller The Hammars of the Dassel-Cokato area have been busy getting their new greenhouse ready for the grand opening of the Midwest Garden Company located south of Dasssel on Highway 15. Sue and Mark Hammar currently own Gardenworks; a garden design and landscape company based out of Cokato and have recently taken on a new venture. “This was a natural extension of what we were already doing,” Hammar said. Sue and family battled the winds as they set up the greenhouse on their own, she said. Her daughter Krista Klemmer of Dassel, and her parents Joyce and Doug Fenderson of New Brighton have been and will continue to help them along the way. “We saw a need in the area and we felt it was the right time and the right place,” Sue Hammar said. Midwest Garden Company will offer a variety of trees and shrubs, annuals, perennials, and garden supplies. Beside the greenhouse will be a log cabin that will be open year-round for gifts such as Sue’s parents homemade stained glass items, cut flower bouquets and embroidered clothing from Embroidery Plus of Dassel. Midwest Garden Company will offer pumpkins and gourds in the fall, along with trees, wreaths and poinsettias for the holiday season. Sue has a degree in horticulture from the University of Minnesota, and has previous experience at Bachmans. She was also a diagnostician for Frank’s Nursery determining plant diseases and she can offer the proper care techniques, Sue explained. Sue will offer her design experience she received through their family business to help customers with basic garden design ideas, she said. “We are excited to add a new business in Dassel,” Sue said.
