Montrose-Waverly ice festival Saturday, Jan. 28
By Ryan Gueningsman
Plans are wrapping up for the second annual Montrose Waverly Chamber of Commerce ice festival and ice fishing derby set to take place Saturday, Jan. 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the American Legion Waterfront Park on Big Waverly Lake.
“We’ve been monitoring ice quality, and are planning to continue to do so from now through the festival,” said organizer Jim Tourville, noting the ice thickness in most places is 10 to 12 inches. “We’re not suggesting that anyone drive on the lake,” he added.
Weather permitting, ice skating sponsored by City of Waverly will also be available. The KRWC Road Show will broadcast live from the event, which will also feature the new “money hole.”
“The money hole is the big thing this year,” Tourville said. “We’ll draw names and people can have five minutes of fishing in the money hole for a chance to win.”
Food and beverages will be served by Waverly Lions, along with coffee, hot chocolate, and doughnuts that will be served by the Montrose and Waverly Ambassadors.
A general raffle featuring a drawing for $100 in Montrose-Waverly community bucks, and more than 100 donated prizes by area businesses will also take place at the event.
Sleigh rides, sled dog rides sponsored by the Waverly Lake Association, a Wright County water rescue presentation, games, and a $50 medallion hunt sponsored by the Waverly and Montrose Booster Clubs are also set to take place.
“We doubled the number of dog sleds this year, so there will be less of a wait for dog sled rides,” Tourville said.
A new event in 2006 will be bowling on ice, sponsored by Montrose Lions. Golf on the ice will also be taking place, along with a bonfire sponsored by the Waverly and Montrose fire departments.
Tourville also said participants can fish wherever they wish on both Big and Little Waverly lakes, and are not confined to the pre-drilled holes. Participants can also bring their fishhouses and fish in them, he added.
