LP business is a tension reliever

Jennifer Ross, massage therapist, is owner of Beyond Relaxation, located in her home on Juniper Street in Lester Prairie.

Her business has been so successful since moving it to her home in January of last year, she quit her full-time job with Hutchinson Technology, where she was using her industrial manufacturing technician degree, to focus all her attention on her Beyond Relaxation customers.

Massage was something that Ross always liked to do. She thought that it might have come from her own mom, who, “used to rub our backs when we were younger.”

But it was at her mother-in-law’s suggestion that she decided to enroll at the Touch of Life School of Massage in Eden Prairie. She graduated after one year of evening and weekend classes.

After completing classes in massage therapy, she rented space in Lester Prairie, currently the Hair Company, for about six months, to do massage therapy in the evenings while she worked full-time during the day, saving her money for a more permanent place for her business.

Ross said she found giving massages in the evening, with the quiet music and dim lights, after working full-time during the day, “very relaxing for me.”

It was about this time that Ross went to her husband, Tim, with the idea of remodeling the attached garage on their home to use for her business.

Tim Ross completed the remodeling project after a few months and Ross moved Beyond Relaxation to its new location on Juniper Street January 2005.

It was a perfect location that was very convenient and gave her the space she needed to do massage. She also added a tanning bed.

Ross had planned to work part time at Beyond Relaxation for about five years before making it a full-time position. However, she found she was working more hours then she had originally planned.

She was thinking about what she really wanted to do and decided, “it just made sense to start.”

She quit her day job and started to work full-time at Beyond Relaxation September 2005. She has never regretted her move. She likes having the flexibility of setting her hours.

Although Ross is originally from Hutchinson and a graduate of Hutchinson High School, she enjoys working with her clients in the Lester Prairie area. “Everyone in the area is very supportive of new business,” she said.

She even likes to think ahead to a day when she could add on a spa and offer other services, like manicures and pedicures. That would probably mean hiring additional help in the future for Ross.

Beyond Relaxation is open by appointment Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon.

Tanning is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Sunday 4 to 9:30 p.m.

Gift certificates can be purchased at her office or at the Hair Company in Lester Prairie.
