Bible study offered to public

By Kristen Miller

A 24-week journey through the Bible will be offered to the public at St. John’s Catholic Church this fall, to help better understand the books in the Bible.

“The Great Adventure: A Journey Through the Bible” was developed by Jeff Cavins to tell the story from beginning to end using 14 books of the New and Old Testaments.

Cavins is a lay theologian and is internationally known. His workshop is the largest in the US.

Three women of St. John’s were impressed by the Great Adventure Bible study in Chanhassen two years ago and were driven to bring it to their Parish.

Linda Poirier, Char Benoit and Kathleen Landreville were among the more than 800 attendees that took the Bible study in 2004.

Last year, they brought the study to St. John’s and were “amazed at the turnout,” Benoit said.

The study shows “how the story fits together,” in reference to salvation history and “our role in it,” she said.

“You don’t need to read the ‘Purpose Driven Life,’ to find your purpose in life. You just need to be familiar with the Bible,” she explained.

They recommend this study “for anyone who has a stirring in your heart,” Poirier said.

“It makes you realize that you aren’t just a spec on the earth. There is a purpose for your being,” Poirier added.

Cavins uses 14 books or “narratives” and his Bible timeline to help make reading the Bible easier even after the sessions are over.

The study also gives “sequential knowledge of the history of the people of Israel and the beginnings of the Christian Church,” according to the workbook.

St. John’s will be offering two sessions for “The Great Adventure: The Bible Timeline” and another session for “The Adventures in Matthew” which focuses on “Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the establishment of the church.”

The first session starts Tuesday, September 12 from 8 to 10 a.m. and the second session Thursday, September 14 from 7 to 9 p.m.

The Adventures in Matthew will start Monday September 18, from 7 to 9 p.m.
