Theater group to perform 'Suessical the Musical'

After years without a theater group, the Dassel-Cokato community can look forward to a production in August with “Suessical the Musical.”

Community Education and the arts council had been discussing getting a theater group going again.

Carolyn Holje, Marcia Provencher and Colleen Compton played major roles in executing both organization’s ideas.

Dave Metcalf, long-time director and retired Howard Lake teacher, was approached with the idea since he had the most time on his hands, he laughed.

“It’s exciting getting something going again,” Metcalf said about the recently “resurrected” theater group.

Ideas were suggested at a brainstorming session between the four, and knowing they wanted to do a musical, “Suessical,” seemed like the right one, Metcalf said.

This fun, upbeat show is family friendly and that kids and adults will enjoy at different levels, according to Metcalf.

“Suessical,” is a completion of Dr. Suess’ most popular stories including “Cat in the Hat,” “Horton Hears a Who,” and “Horton Hatches an Egg.”

There will be allusions to several other things not prominent in the musical, but suggested, Metcalf said.

Included in the musical are several moral lessons such as responsibility and encouraging creativity, he said.

For example, in the musical, Horton the elephants gets in trouble for thinking too creatively but then, ends up saving the planet because of his creativity.

There are 37 actors and actresses from around the area including several from the same family.

Patti Kampa from Cokato is participating along with her two sons, Sam and Brandon, as well as father and son group Harvey and Ryan Peterson.

This is Ryan’s first theater production, his father Harvey claims he sings in the shower and he thought this would be a good opportunity for Ryan to get his “feet wet,” and do something together.

“It’s fun working with the people I’ve known for many years as well as getting to know the new people,” Harvey said.

The musical will be a “visual extravaganza,” Metcalf said, with the costumes, puppets and lighting.

Diane Gasch is building an eagle with a six-foot wing span along with other puppets for the production.

Dave Nordschow, a professional sound and lighting director, is working with the musical along with his wife, Judy.

Rachel Kurtz will be sharing her musical talents as well.

“I can’t say enough about the cast,” said Metcalf. “It’s a talented bunch.”
