A blessing for the community
Fr. Michael Joseph Miller, The Churches of St. Peter and St. Joseph, Delano
God, creator of heaven and earth, we ask your blessings upon Joe McDonald as he begins his term as mayor of Delano; upon city council members Larry Bartels and Brad Hotchkiss as they begin their terms; Holly Schrupp, and the member to be added; and upon all who work with them and for the city. May they always have in mind the good of those they represent, and the responsibility their office entails.
Grant them prudence that their decisions may bring the good of the past and present into the future. May they and all of the citizens of Delano, old and new, recognize with gratitude the heritage that we have been given, particularly those qualities of life that are unique to our community, and that especially thrive in a small town rooted in rural life values.
Make them keenly aware that the decisions of the present affect the future course of our history. Help them to direct that course in a way that preserves and builds upon those qualities so that present and future generations may gratefully and loyally call Delano their home.
Grant them a deep sense of justice that promotes the common good, while protecting the rights of each individual.
Grant them courage that they may always stand on the side of truth, goodness, and right.
Grant them and their families patience to endure the difficulties of their office: the many demands on their time, and the sometimes-opposing requests of those they represent.
Grant them generosity of heart to work with each other and those whom they serve with unfailing respect, good will, and understanding. Reward them and their families for their service, and help us all to appreciate their hard work and sacrifices.
Bless all the citizens of Delano. Forgive us our sins and grant us the grace to forgive one another. Help us to remember that life is short. Help us to love you above all things, and our neighbor as ourselves.
Grant that we may pass through this world leaving it a better place, always mindful that our citizenship, and our true home, is in heaven.
Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
